
Col. Adolph Engelmann of Shiloh, Illinois. A Mexican War veteran was instrumental in the recruitment of the 43rd Illinois, and was elected it’s 1st Lieutenant Colonel. After the Mortal Wounding of Colonel Raith at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862; he led the 43rd Illinois at Corinth, Vicksburg and through Arkansas.
After the War, President Johnson made him a Brevet Brigadier General. Col. Engelmann would attend many veteran reunions and was a charter member of the Hecker Post #443, G.A.R. He passed away on 5 Oct. 1890, after a short illness. He was laid to rest with soldiers’ honors, on his farm in Shiloh.
